ABOUT US
OUR HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
The Cape Town Montessori School, previously named Stepping Stones, was founded in 1983 by a small group of motivated parents. These parents funded and sourced equipment, and in some cases, built furniture.

Their commitment and enthusiasm for the Montessori philosophy & methodology, coupled with dedicated teachers, ensured the continuous growth of the school. The Cape Town Montessori School is one of a few origional Montessori schools in Cape Town.

From the initial small beginning in St. John’s Hostel with two very small classes, growth necessitated a move to De Lorentz Street, Tamboerskloof, with approximately 50 children.

We have been in Oranjezicht since 1996 at our current premises in Sylvan Close where we continue to enrich the lives, learning and development of children and their families in Cape Town.
OUR VALUES AND PHILOSOPHY
At Cape Town Montessori School (CTMS), we believe every child is born with the potential to grow into an independent, capable, and compassionate member of society. Guided by the Montessori philosophy, we provide a nurturing and inspiring environment where children can explore, discover, and learn at their own pace.

Our specially prepared classrooms—from toddlers through to elementary—support the development of academic, social, emotional, creative, and practical life skills. Through hands-on learning and individualised guidance, we cultivate a life-long love of learning and a deep sense of responsibility in every child.

At CTMS, we honour each child’s unique path and believe in the importance of strong family-school partnerships. Our approach empowers children to think critically, act independently, and contribute positively to their communities and the world.
DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION
Diversity and inclusion are deeply rooted in the Montessori approach. At CTMS, we are committed to creating a school community that reflects the rich diversity of our broader society and ensures every child and adult feels a sense of belonging and respect.

We strive to build a space that honours each individual’s worth and fosters understanding, curiosity, and acceptance. We celebrate a wide range of identities and experiences, including (but not limited to) race, culture, language, gender, ability, and background. These differences are actively embraced through connection, awareness, and collaboration.
Our parent-and-staff-led D&I Working Group drives initiatives across the school to make this vision a lived reality.
